12:45 pm: Simon & Théodore @ SFJFF

July 29, 2018

The San Francisco Jewish Film Festival will screen the narrative feature, Simon & Théodore.

"Simon is a loving husband to Rivkah, a rabbi who is eight-and-a-half months pregnant. They are in love and Simon is kind, thoughtful and caring. The only problem? Simon can’t stop hitting himself and neither his most recent stay at a mental institution nor the imminent arrival of his son seem to have helped him turn a corner. Rivkah is concerned about having him as a part of their newborn’s life. Théodore is 13 and studying for his bar mitzvah. But his mother doesn’t know where he goes after school and his absentee father doesn’t respond to him or his invitation to his bar mitzvah, not to mention his habit of losing his temper and hitting people and his hesitancy to communicate. When Théodore runs away from his own bar mitzvah ceremony, Simon follows, taking the opportunity as a chance to connect with the boy and thus prove to Rivkah that he can take care of their son when he arrives. As the unlikely duo travels through Paris getting angry, getting scared and getting close, they lean on each other and attempt to help one another fill in their own blanks before it is too late."

2:00 pm: The Waiting Period

July 29, 2018

"This show is an unrelenting look at a ten-day period in Copeland’s life—the mandatory ten-day waiting period before he could lay his hands on the newly purchased gun with which he planned to take his own life. Even in the midst of this tragedy, however, his wonderful sense of the comedy of life does not desert him (how much should he spend on the gun?), indeed serves him insidiously well as a buffer against the grim reality of his intention. Copeland hopes this very personal, and ultimately redemptive, story will reach people who struggle with depression—often called the last stigmatized disease—as well as their families and loved ones. Interspersed with interviews with other sufferers, the play, like so many Marsh stories, also offers outsiders an insider’s view, thereby expanding our understanding and, hopefully, our humanity."

6:55 pm: Satan & Adam @ SFJFF

July 29, 2018

The San Francisco Jewish Film Festival will screen the feature-length documentary, Satan & Adam.

"NYC 1986. Adam, a lanky young blond-haired guy walks down 125th Street exploring Harlem and sees a grizzled street musician, a one-man band who sings and plays the guitar and percussion with his feet at the same time. He calls himself Mr. Satan and he plays a mean blues. Unexpectedly, the white Jewish kid pulls out a harmonica and asks Satan to jam, and a musical partnership in perfect sync is born. The street musician is Sterling Magee, who is rumored to have played with James Brown, Ray Charles, King Curtis, Etta James and other blues luminaries. Adam believes, despite his Ivy League education, that it was his mission in life to do this.

The odd couple are soon killing it at music festivals and other gigs. They cut a record. One of Satan’s tunes ends up on a U2 album. Then, suddenly, Satan drops out of sight. Two years later, the filmmakers find him in St. Petersburg, Florida. The old man had a stroke and can’t play the guitar anymore. But the connection is still strong, and Satan and Adam attempt to reconstitute the act. This documentary, a big attention-getter at the Tribeca Film Festival, captures a fascinating journey of friendship, heartbreak and the transformative power of the blues."

7:00 pm: 4.48 Psychosis

July 29, 2018

"Anton’s Well Theater Company is proud to present a rare local production of 4.48 Psychosis, Sarah Kane’s searing examination of depression.

Our production features actors Anastasia Barron, Jody Christian, and Adrian Deane. The creative crew is the same one that produced last year’s “astonishing” Tender Napalm: Director Robert Estes, Assistant Director/Producer Wm. Diedrick Razo, Choreographer Bridgette Loriaux, Music Composer Greg Zema, and Lighting Designer Nathan Bogner.

The New York Times finds that 4.48 Psychosis is “breathtakingly beautiful” and that Sarah Kane’s language “creates the most persuasive and authentic portrait of what it means to be terminally depressed…ever encountered in a theater.”

4.48 Psychosis opens on Friday, July 20. The show runs Fridays and Saturdays, 8PM, Sundays 7PM from July 20 to August 5 (with one Thursday performance on August 2) at the Temescal Arts Center, 511 48th Street, Oakland. Tickets are $17-$20."

4:00 pm: Sammy Davis, Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me @ SFJFF

August 4, 2018

The San Francisco Jewish Film Festival will screen Sammy Davis, Jr.: I've Gotta Be Me, a feature length documentary about the Rat Packer.

"At the age of three his immense talent was already on display as he sang and tap danced his way across the country performing with his father and godfather. In the 1950s, he notoriously dated Hollywood star Kim Novak prompting Columbia Pictures bigwig Harry Cohn to order him to stick to Black women. Following a serious car accident in which he lost an eye, Davis converted to Judaism. In the 1960s, the only African American member of the legendary Rat Pack, he supported John F. Kennedy's candidacy, marched in Selma with Martin Luther King and became a prominent activist in the civil rights movement. And then in 1972 he shocked the country by supporting Richard Nixon for reelection, giving him a famous hug on stage during the Republican convention.

It's hard to imagine a more talented and groundbreaking performer who led a more complicated and contradictory life than Davis. He did not shy away from controversy and was not afraid to use his name and talent for a good cause. Featuring excerpts from his exhilarating performances and interviews with the likes of Billy Crystal, Norman Lear, Jerry Lewis and Whoopi Goldberg, director Sam Pollard's riveting documentary unpacks the apparent contradictions and presents a very full and very human portrait of this complex, courageous and conflicted man."

August 17, 2018

"In partnership withe the Potrero Hill Family Support Center (PHFSC), we will show a family-friendly film and PHFSC will provide a meal.

Our movie this month is Wonder.  Based on the book by R. J. Palacio, Wonder is the story of a 10-year-old boy with facial differences who attends school for the first time when he begins the fifth grade. With the support of his parents, he learns how to make friends and adjust to his new environment."

To the shock of literally no one, August is played by a non-disabled actor and Julia Roberts plays his mother.

Inspired by the author and her son one time seeing a disabled person in public. I'm not kidding; look it up.

6:30 pm: Pagliacci by Ruggiero Leoncavallo - Opera Talk with Film Clips

August 29, 2018

"Larry Oppenheim of Opera for the People will tell and show the story  of Pagliacci to be performed by the SF Opera between September 7th and September 30th, 2018. Pagliacci (The Clowns) may be the most compelling short opera ever written. Based on a real life incident, the story is told as a play within a play. A troupe of traveling actors portrays the stock characters of Italian comedy: Harlequin, Columbine, and the Clown (Pagliaccio). But tragedy is inevitable. Real life intrudes on a stage play, as the audience gasps.

This film of the 2007 Verona production simply kills – both figuratively and literally. French tenor Roberto Alagna sings his heart out as Canio, the murderously jealous clown married to an unfaithful wife. Bulgarian soprano Svetla Vassileva catches fire as Neddat, a woman controlled by her passions. Italian baritone Alberto Mastromarino is the hunchback Tonio, who plots revenge against Nedda for mocking his declarations of love."

So, quick question, why do writers use disabled male characters as a vehicle for fulfilling their toxic, misogynistic revenge fantasies against women? Is this a "commit representational violence against two birds with one stone" kinda situation?
