Presence and Absence explores the reasons that portraits of the disabled body have been absent from art museums all over the world. With the exception of the unexpected, and problematic, locations where the crip body does persist in the story of the painted human form. Lehrer discusses her own work in portraiture as part of this millenia-old, complicated game of hide-and-seek. Riva Lehrer is an artist, writer and curator whose work focuses on issues of physical identity and the socially challenged body. She is best known for representations of people with impairments, and those whose sexuality or gender identity have long been stigmatized. The event's wheelchair accessible and free.
